WASHINGTON – Finding a new animal species is a special moment for scientists and even better when one hops into their mountain camp and volunteers to be discovered. An international team of researchers was camping in the Foja mountains of Indonesia when herpetologist Paul Oliver spied a frog sitting on a bag of rice in the campsite.

Case studies published in Current Biology magazine examine how chimpanzees mourn their dead. In some ways the primates behave similarly to human beings, but the reactions varied. The emotional responses can range from loud and seemingly violent to apparently deeply felt anguish.

Stanley E. Curtis, University of Illinois professor emeritus and one of the world’s most influential scientists in the field of animal behavior and wellbeing, died April 25, after suffering a heart attack. He was 68.

£2.7 million grant to improve UK animal welfare
The five-year project, led by the University of Bristol's Department of Clinical Veterinary Science together with the RSPCA and the Soil Association, hopes to overcome fundamental problems of welfare assessment that have hampered the ability of assurance schemes to improve farm animal welfare in recent years.

More than 1,500 students from across the United States are expected to attend the SAVMA event, which stands for Student American Veterinary Medical Association. The symposium brings together veterinary medical students to learn about the latest science and technology the profession has to offer, event organizers said.
