April 13, 2010 at 3:27am - EntrepreneurshipFinding a business partner to start up a great idea can be tough. I've spoken with four potential people myself before deciding to follow through with MajorIndulgence on my own. The key to finding great partners is to understand that your business is essentially a jigsaw puzzle, and all the pieces need to be there in order to complete it. If you find people that kinda-sorta fit into the puzzle, they're no good. It must be just the right piece.
To start off, you want to evaluate yourself and what your strengths are. Then determine how many of those puzzle pieces can you cover with only your owns strengths. The missing pieces represent the people that you must find. Contrary to what many people think, you should not find people who are exactly like you, because then there will only be duplicate skills, thus still not being able to complete the puzzle. Instead, find people who believe in your idea just as much as you do, and have different but complementary skills to complete the business.
With me personally, I ultimately decided to learn all the skills necessary to bring MajorIndulgence into fruition. There's a severe downside to this of course. If I'm stuck on something, it's basically up to me to overcome it. And as for moral support? Well there is none when you're going solo. However the plus side is that you get to own 100% of your company and you get the satisfaction of knowing that you were solely responsible for its creation.
In the end it doesn't matter how you go about completing the puzzle. The important thing is that you complete it.
