I haven't been to google's home page in such a long time since I use the browser shortcut. Now Google has other extaneous links on its home page hidden until you move the mouse. I'm guessing it's just for cleanup, but I don't think the page loads any faster since the other elements are still loaded, but just hidden.

The new aesthetic touch is more distracting than anything else when you see it fade in.
