Topic: How much do critics' opinions matter to you? |
In music - no value
In television - no value In film - significant value (rottentomatoes for example)
In video games - significant value (IGN, GameSpot, Gamerankings) The reason that it matters to me in film and video games is because historically I tend to agree with the general consensus, so I've found them to be fairly reliable. That doesn't mean that there aren't any exceptions, of course.

Music
- people who criticize music make me sick, it's really an opinion business, you either like it or you don't like it. There is no good music or bad music, just different genres and styles that appeal to different people. Television
- I would rather give every show a chance before some overpaid critic tells me what they think about it. I am my own critic of television, no one else can tell me whether or not I'll enjoy the show. Movies
- I too listen to what rottentomatoes has to say about movies because in the past, movies they've said were good, I really enjoyed, and movies they said weren't too great, I thought were very boring and dull. Video Games
- I never buy/rent/download/demo a game until I've read enough and seen/heard enough about it to know very well that I'll enjoy it. Between Gamespot, IGN, MMORPG, and YouTube, I can convince myself whether or not I'll like a game. I use Gamespot for finding out about new games and upcoming games, IGN typically has more info on those games so I head over there to read about them, MMORPG also has a fair bit of information on games and it's forums can be very helpful in making a decision, and youtube generally has gameplay footage because with todays tech world, most video game trailers are all in CG and don't give you a feel for the gameplay, After all of this, I decide whether the game is worth trying. If it is, I find a demo and give it a try, if I like it, I'm buying it.
