There's a video of the assault in the link.

I live in Seattle so I just saw this in the news. It basically shows a 15yo teenage girl getting completely beaten by another girl while 3 security guards just stand by and do not much of anything.

I later found out that the security guards are trained not to intervene in fights and to report them instead. But cmon this is not some big burly brawl by big men, it's just a single teenage girl who is doing the fighting. They didn't do a damn thing. That girl is lucky that she didn't die from all those shots to the head.

CRAZY

I don't care what your contract says, I think you would be rewarded for preventing things such as this. Prevent it, then report it. It shouldn't matter what your job description is, you're a security guard...and you're bigger than these two girls, stop the freaking fight, it's common sense. People are dumb!

Unfortunately, I think the guards know that they would get fired if they broke the rules.

I also hear cases where a retail employee tries to stop a thief, but ends up getting fired because he/she broke proper procedure. The rules are just effed up.

yes...I used to work at Circuit City and we were instructed to report theft rather than attempt to prevent it. Kind of silly if you ask me. And one time I did in fact witness someone stealing a DVD and an Xbox 360 Controller. Following the rules, I did nothing but let it happen, and then tell the manager immediately after the theft occurred. One of my co-workers had someone grab a camera right out of his hands and run out the front door, the co-worker proceeded to chase the thief into the parking lot and retrieve the license plate of the thief's getaway car, after reporting the information to a manager, the police were notified and the information was passed on to authorities. The co-worker, after doing such an honorable deed, was more or less "fired" for this act of heroism. The co-worker explained to me that the manager put it like this "Though your act was intelligent, quick minded, and may have helped to track down the thief, what you did was against company policy and we have to let you go." Kind of dumb if you ask me.

Maybe the company thinks that if there's any injury from either the criminal or employee, that they might get hit with a lawsuit. Therefore by being passive and only reporting theft, no physical harm comes about.
