Topic: Wow, I have a lot of respect for director Ang Lee and his wife. |
I was just reading his wikipedia page, and I read that after he finished his graduate studies, he remained unemployed for about six years and took care of the kids while his wife was the sole breadwinner of the family. Lee considered doing something else for a career many times during this period, but with the encouragement of his wife he continued to pursue his dream of making films instead of settling for something else that wouldn't have made him happy.
It takes a lot of drive and pure determination on Lee's part to not give up after six years of failing to break into the film industry...just imagine six years of nothingness.
And with his wife, it takes a strong woman to endure that kind of a household situation and continue to support her husband rather than demand him to find something else to do.
I just think in life it's easy to resign into a state of mediocrity (both in your professional and personal life) and call it "good enough." But it takes an infinitely strong-willed person to refuse to settle and pursue what he/she truly wants until death.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not a religious or spiritual person. I believe that this current life is the only one I have. There is nothing else after death. So if I majorly screw up my life by settling into things that I'm not really happy with, then I have no second chance to redeem myself.

gender roles are reversing. it's fine for women to be breadwinners.
we don't live in the dark ages anymore
