Because you see your reflections in them. Matte screens > Glossy screens.

And what makes it worse is that some companies like Apple charge you an extra $50 for the matte screen. I own a Macbook Pro, but back then you could choose the matte without an extra cost. That sucks for new Macbook buyers.
