For those who don't know the controversy surrounding Salman Rushdie, in 1988 he wrote the Satanic Verses, which led to lots of outrage from the Muslim community and let to a fatwa (a declaration) against his life. As a result he had to go into hiding for 9 years before finally emerging back into public view. The threat on his life has waned over the years, but his life is still at risk.

I'm just amazed that he's still alive. The way I see it, if he does end up getting assasinated, he'll just be a marytr of free speech.
